Fathi M.A. Ahmed

Fathi M.A. Ahmed is CILRAP Arabic Translation Team Leader and one of the leading Arabic-English-Arabic translators in the fields of international law and organisation. He holds a master’s degree in translation studies from the University of London and did his undergraduate studies at Helwan University (both summa cum laude), followed by diploma studies in translation at the American University of Cairo (AUC) which hired him to teach legal and UN translation. While at the AUC, he co-developed legal, UN and other translation courses. Focusing on practice rather than academia, he took several language and other courses at the AUC, the UN Secretariat and various UN agencies.
He has, inter alia, translated some of the books by the late Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni into Arabic, and has multiple publications on translation questions. Having passed several international competitive language examinations, he has provided translation, terminology and editing services to the UN Secretariat (New York, Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi), several UN specialized agencies (including the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Atomic Energy Agency and the United Nations Environment Programme), in addition to the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, and several international non-governmental organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Center for Asset Recovery of the Basel Institute on Governance, and the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights. Mr. Ahmed served at the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI), where he first worked with Professor Bassiouni and other international criminal law experts.
Mr. Ahmed is an active member of the Geneva-based Association Internationale des Traducteurs de Conférence. He is a strong advocate for multilingualism on which he has provided specialist advice to the newly-established Lyon-based WHO Academy.
He has been awarded several letters, certificates and awards of appreciation, excellence and merit in the fields of teaching and translation by the AUC, the UN, as well as the late Professor Bassiouni as a chairman of BICI and later as a multilingual author.
