Peter McCloskey, CILRAP Conversation on World Order

Speaker: Mr. Peter McCloskey (ret. lead Srebrenica ICTY-prosecutor; formerly, United States federal prosecutor).
Topic: A CILRAP Conversation on World Order focusing on aspects of his long career as an international criminal law prosecutor; on factors that made the ICTY a success; on the nurturing of cultures of quality-control in international criminal jurisdictions; the selection of high officials in such institutions; the existing integrity standard in international courts and tribunals; on the ICTY-cases on Srebrenica, their justice contribution, challenges faced, what actually happened in Srebrenica, what the international community should have done differently, and other enclaves in Bosnia-Herzegovina that faced similar violations; how this legacy of violence continues to influence Serbian society; reasons why the ICTY does not yet function on the same level as the ICC; role of the U.S. State Department Office for Global Criminal Justice and the importance of having international criminal law expertise in foreign ministries; the use of expertise in the oversight of international criminal jurisdictions; on the tension between accountability and peace; and how one prepares for international criminal law service.
